Human Trafficking: Global. Local. Stoppable.
An Event Hosted by Netivot Shalom
Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.
Netivot Shalom Social Hall – 1316 University Avenue in Berkeley
From distant quarries to nearby restaurants, seedy massage parlors to sprawling plantations, the great evil of slavery is alive and well in our world. According to experts in the field, there are about 27 million slaves today—not merely people living in crowded slums, doing backbreaking work for low pay, or lacking human rights—but slaves, people who can't walk away, can't quit, can't leave because they or their families will be threatened, beaten, or worse.
Two Oakland residents learned about the shocking realities of modern-day slavery, and felt compelled to do something about it. Nate and Laura Davis, co-founders of Free Is a Verb, are moving to the Philippines for a year to work against human trafficking. Join the Davises and other local nonprofits at Netivot Shalom for a night dedicated to learning, inspiration, and most importantly, information on how you can help fight modern-day slavery.
