My teacher, Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson, challenged some colleagues to make a list of what we consider to be the top ten or so issues confronting contemporary Jewish life. They could be issues of modernity, moral dilemmas, political issues, issues of identity, ethnicity, faith, destiny, observance, education, or history. These are a few issues from my personal list.
- Multiple Authenticities in Jewish communal life
- Commandedness/Compelling-ness in the Modern Jew's life
- Intermarriage (meaning not "it completes Hitler's work!" but "is it the wrong thing to do?")
- Davening as Opposed to Praying
- A Holistic Zionism (both aspects of Herzl's dream: protecting and developing the Jewish State)
- Jewish Youth Education: demanding inclusion and sustainability
- "Jewish Establishment in the Cloud" - the paradigm shift from "headquarters" to technologically-enabled organizing, where "location" is irrelevant
