|  This Thursday the Senate is expected to take up gun violence prevention legislation. But this won't happen unless you and I help convince the Senators who are threatening a filibuster to instead address this crucial issue.
We first asked you to raise your voices following the horrific tragedy in Newtown. Now Bend the Arc is partnering with dozens of other groups from a broad range of faith traditions in calling on the Senate to pass gun violence prevention legislation and to make our country safer for our children. Let them know that you are a constituent and a member of Bend the Arc and that you are urging them to pass meaningful gun violence prevention legislation that would: - Ban semi-automatic assault weapons and high-capacity magazines
- Make gun trafficking a federal crime
- Enhance school and campus safety
- Improve access to mental health services
Universal background checks are also essential to gun violence prevention and viable as a bipartisan solution: - 2.1 million illegal gun buyers have been stopped by background checks - they work!
- Under current federal law only licensed firearms dealers are required to conduct background checks - everyone else is free to sell guns to practically anyone without any type of check.
- Universal background checks legislation cannot and will not lead to the creation of a national gun registry.
