The Ten Dvarim ("Commandments"): a class with Nitzhia Shaked

The Ten Dvarim ("Commandments"):

the Foundation of Jewish Law,

taught by Nitzhia Shaked

at Congregation Netivot Shalom

Six Mondays: May 17th, 24th, 31st, June 7th, 21st and 28th

(no class June 14th), 7:30 to 9:00 pm, in the CNS Library

"The Ten Commandments" may seem quite familiar, but what do they really mean?  We begin by considering the nature and importance of the Ten Dvarim (utterances), taken together, as the foundation of Jewish Law. Our focus then shifts to an in-depth text study of the separate Dvarim in Exodus and Deuteronomy, analyzing some challenging rabbinic and modern ideas on the content of each.

Nitzhia Shaked received her LL.B degree from Hebrew University in Jerusalem and LL.M degree from Harvard Law School. She has been a member of both Israel and California Bar associations. In addition to her law career, Nitzhia has been engaged in Jewish text research and teaching since the early 1980s, including positions at San Francisco State University, Sonoma State University, Lehrhaus Judaica and most recently the adult education program of Palo-Alto JCC.   She regularly leads Shabbat Torah study at Netivot Shalom and Bnai-Shalom.
