Early yesterday morning, Israel Navy soldiers boarded six flotilla vessels headed for Gaza in contravention of a military closure under international law. After non-compliance, Navy soldiers boarded the ships with non-lethal weapons and were met on one of the vessels with life threatening attacks from activists using live fire ammunition, firebombs, knives and metal rods. At this point, the soldiers used force sufficient to defend their lives. Israel regrets the fatalities among the flotilla participants, and is treating the wounded in Israeli hospitals.
