Imam Magid Discusses Youth as an Instrument of Peace,

ISNA President Imam Mohamed Magid appeared Monday on MSNBC's the Dylan Ratigan show. Alongside "One World 2011" President and CEO Bob Walsh, the two discussed the goals and strategies of One World to alleviate religious discrimination, disputes, and anti-Muslim rhetoric.
"Billions of people around the world live in harmony and respect. In America, we have Jews and Christians who slept in the parking lot of mosques to protect them (after 9/11). With youth and 'One World 2011' we can bring youth together to multiply this," said Imam Magid.

| ISNA Announces Call for Papers for
12th Annual Education Forum
ISNA seeks qualified educators, researchers, and professionals to inspire and lead today's educators and Islamic school professionals at the 12th Annual ISNA Education Forum. The Forum will take place on April 22-24 in Rosemont, Illinois under the theme, "Understanding, Living, and Sharing Islam."
ISNA is seeking presenters for the forum and is now accepting proposals for presentations through December 6, 2010. All proposals must be grounded in practice, experience and supported by research.

ISNA Moves Halal Certification to the Next Level
On Saturday October 30, ISNA Secretary General Safaa Zarzour and ISNA Director of Development Ahmed ElHattab attended the 2nd Annual American Muslim Consumer Conference (AMCC).
More than 400 industry professionals attended the conference, including representatives from mainstream brands such as Western Union, Pepsi and Best Buy and Muslim-operated brands such as Saffron Road, Guidance Residential and Crescent Foods. There were also communications professionals, journalists and bloggers in attendance to learn more about the Muslim consumer market and how to meet their needs.
Secretary General Zarzour moderated a session at the conference focusing on the challenges and opportunities facing the halal market in North America. Additionally, members of the American Halal Association (AHA) reached a consensus at Saturday's conference that ISNA would take the lead to establish a U.S. Halal Accreditation Board.
"Currently, there are no industry-wide standards for halal certification. With this new development, Muslim consumers will have peace of mind that when a product is halal certified it is adhering to uniform and well defined standards," stated ISNA Secretary General Safaa Zarzour.
Representatives from ISNA and AHA will attend the World Halal Forum next week in London. "ISNA looks forward to taking the lead on Halal certification in the U.S. and representing the interests of the American Muslim community to industries throughout the U.S.," said Zarzour.

ISNA President and Vice President Visit ISNA Headquarters
On Tuesday November 2, ISNA President Imam Mohamed Magid and ISNA Vice President Azhar Azeez traveled to ISNA headquarters to meet with staff. ISNA Secretary General Safaa Zarzour opened the discussion, which focused on the growth of ISNA under the new leadership team.
"We must continue to take ourselves to the doorsteps of our local communities and ensure that ISNA represents the needs of our members at the grassroots level," said Imam Magid.
Both Imam Magid and Azhar Azeez pledged that their term would be a team effort, where contributions of every member are valued and an open door policy for staff communication is present.
One important area of discussion focused on ISNA's commitment to ensure that it leads local communities in a direction that welcomes women, youth, and the diversity of Muslims into our masjids and community centers.
"One important aspect in this process is to continue increasing the diversity, in gender, age, and ethnicity, of ISNA staff, board, and leadership. This past election, our members elected not only a diverse group of representatives to the ISNA Majlis, but also the youngest person ever," stated Azeez.

ISNA President Writes in Washington Post About the Deviant Theology of Violent Extremists
In the Post article, published Oct 29, 2010, Imam Magid writes,
"As an American imam at one of the largest mosques in the DC Metro area, I am greatly troubled by the new cases of violent extremism among Western Muslims, both American and European. Recent cases of young people engaging in violent extremism clearly show they have not learned Islam from respected, well-known Muslim scholars. Instead they have learned a deviant theology through the Internet, often from Western-born hate preachers adept at misusing their knowledge of our society.
These hate preachers claim that genuine Islamic scholars are not credible, and actively try to invalidate their teachings by completely distorting both the message and the way it is communicated. There are several major problems with these hate preachers." ISNA Opens Registration for January 2011 Diversity Forum
In partnership with the Council of Islamic Organizations of Michigan (CIOM), ISNA will host its first Diversity Forum, "Realizing the Dream: Finding Strength through Diversity." Scheduled for January 14-16 2011 in Detroit, the event coincides with the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and will address issues of diversity ranging from race to sects within Islam. "Islam is the most diverse religion in the world, and while this is a great strength of our community, it is also our challenge. ISNA was founded on the mission of representing the plurality of Muslims in America and is proud to serve that mission and our community with this diversity forum. ISNA is dedicated to working with local communities, representing our diverse population, and ensuring that the doors of our mosques are open to women, youth, and the broad range of ethnicities," said ISNA Secretary General Safaa Zarzour.
