| JCRC Action Alert: Block Harmful BDS Bill at UC Berkeley UC Berkeley's Student Senate will consider a divest-from-Israel resolution tomorrow. Now it is more important than ever to take action to block this move. The JCRC is working closely with Hillel and pro-Israel student activists to defeat this measure, but we need your help. Last month, Stanford's pro-Israel community was successful in defeating a proposed divestment bill. Their efforts were helped by the mobilization of the Jewish community and Stanford alumni community. In just two days, more than 800 alumni signed a letter to student senators entreating them to drop the hateful and inflammatory bill. We did it at Stanford - let's make this happen at Berkeley too. Time is running out and there are less than 24 hours left! Two petitions have been written to share with ASUC Senators the depth of concern about the biased resolution. More about the bill: The resolution, authored by Student Action Senator George Kadifa, calls for the divestment of ASUC and UC assets from any companies that provide support to Israel's military in Palestine or contribute to the building, maintenance or economic development of Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories. An opposing bill has been put forth by Student Action Senator and presidential candidate Rafi Lurie, which supports the two state solution and calls for the ASUC to instruct managers of its funds to "seek investment opportunities that strengthen Israeli-Palestinian cooperation" rather than divesting funds. |
