Letter to the editor - SF Chronicle

When clergy of any faith is narrowly defined and confused with civil
authority, we are all in trouble. I represent a significant
cross-section of many faithful people in my fight for equal civil
marriage. Yes, my ordination flavors and fuels my advocacy with a
religiously-infused civic ethic, but Imperial County's conflation of
God and country ("County leads battle against gay weddings," Aug. 22)
is emblematic of the only reason I wear my 'rabbi hat' in public
discourse. I pray for the day that clergy is only authorized by
society to perform religious rites. Until then, varying faith voices
will sway civic policy, I'm afraid.
